I started reading in the book of Jonah recently. I think we all know the story of Jonah. He’s the one who was swallowed up by a fish and stayed in the fish’s belly for three days and three nights. I know I’ve read this story before, but it hit me differently this time. It’s funny how the Holy Spirit will highlight something you’ve read before in a brand new way and it hits you in a new way too.
God commanded Jonah to go to Ninevah and preach. Ninevah had become very wicked and God wanted them to repent and turn back to Him. The Bible says that Jonah ran away from the Lord and decided he would go to a totally different city, Tarshish. Jonah found a ship in Joppa, jumped on and set out on his own way to Tarshish.
The Lord sent a great and violent storm. All of the sailors were terrified and cried out to their own gods. Jonah was asleep and the captain of the ship went to Jonah. The captain asked Jonah, “How can you sleep? Get up and call on your god! Maybe he will take notice of us so that we will not perish.” Jonah 1:6
The sailors decided that they would cast lots to figure out who was responsible for the storm. The lot fell on Jonah. The sailors began to ask Jonah, “…What kind of work do you do? Where do you come from?…” Jonah 1:8 Jonah had already told them that he was running away from the Lord.
This is where Holy Spirit stopped me in my tracks. “The seas was getting rougher and rougher. So they asked him, What should we do to you to make the sea calm down for us? ‘Pick me up and throw me into the sea,’ he replied, ‘and it will become calm. I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you.” Jonah 1:11-12
Forgive me as I take liberty of the Scripture and explain what the Lord showed me.
When God asks or tells you to do something and you don’t do it, your disobedience falls onto those around you. It was a storm for the sailors, but it might be a sickness or a storm of sorts for you and your family. Your “obedience is better than sacrifice”. Proverbs 21:3
If God has asked you to do something, there are people who are depending on you to be obedient to Him. Jonah did end up going to Ninevah and he preached a very short and to the point sermon. “Forty more days and Ninevah will be overthrown.” Jonah 3:4 The Bible goes on to say that everyone repented and God had compassion on them.
I too, feel inadequate, unqualified, and not smart enough to do anything for God, especially this blog. I am tired of fighting satan’s stupid lies. God says that WE (ME AND YOU) are called for such a time as this. He calls the unqualified, qualified. All throughout the Bible God goes against culture, against what we as human’s think is the right person for a job. He calls on the little guy, the poor man, the least of these. I just love that about our Father. None of us are good enough, but He makes up for our shortcomings. We just have to be obedient and trust Him.
Be obedient today. It’s not too late. Your obedience is all that He needs. Your obedience is better than sacrifice.
Love you guys. Praying we all become more obedient to Him!
